Fanforth Privacy Policy

Last updated: 14 September 2026

Fanforth is operated by Mitmon Labs in Ontario, Canada. This policy covers the Fanforth iPhone app, Apple Watch companion, and support requests about them. Fanforth identifies music playing nearby, displays lyrics, and lets you keep private Moments of where you heard a song. It has no advertising, analytics SDKs, or tracking. You can use it without enabling iCloud sync.

Microphone

Fanforth captures microphone audio only while a listening session is active. Tap Start to begin and Stop to end. Start Automatically is optional and off on a new install. Continue in Background is off by default unless you have saved a preference. Enabling it lets an active session keep listening while the phone is locked or another app is open. You can turn it off in Settings.

Microphone buffers are processed by Apple's ShazamKit to identify music using acoustic signatures. Fanforth does not save audio recordings or send raw microphone audio to its lyrics backend. Apple processes recognition requests under its own privacy policy. If you enable Save to Shazam, identified songs are also added to your Shazam library. Manage those entries in Shazam separately.

Song lookups and lyrics

Fanforth requests lyrics through its own service at lyrics.mitmon.com. Fanforth's own read-only M6 database is the primary lyrics source. Public LRCLIB is used only as a server-side fallback when the database has no usable result, using the same song metadata. The database contains an LRCLIB catalog snapshot; existing content credits are retained separately. The app sends only song title, artist, optional album and recording duration to this lyrics service, never raw microphone audio or recognition IDs. It does not call lrclib.net directly for lyrics. The M6 service does not persist public fallback lyrics or log song queries. If an alternative licensed lyrics backend is configured, it can also receive song identifiers and ISRC metadata; Settings identifies the active provider.

Apple's iTunes catalog receives title and artist to find artwork, catalog information and music links. As with other internet requests, the services receive the connecting IP address. These requests do not include your Fanforth iCloud identifier or saved locations. Each service's privacy policy applies to its processing.

Lyrics are cached on the device only when the configured provider settings and the individual response permit it, for the configured permitted lifetime. iOS can purge the cache. Translation and lyric sharing are available only when enabled under the provider's permissions. A share uses the iOS share sheet and sends the content only to the destination you select.

Apple Watch companion

When you open Fanforth on your paired Apple Watch, the iPhone sends the current song title, artist, listening status, current and next lyric lines, and provider credit through Apple WatchConnectivity. The watch holds this information in memory while its app is active. Fanforth does not save these lyrics on the watch or queue them for later delivery; stale lyrics disappear when the connection stops updating. The watch does not access its microphone, location, photos, or health data, and makes no direct lyrics-provider requests.

The watch can ask the iPhone to start or stop listening. Starting a new session requires the iPhone app to be open and microphone permission to be granted. The iPhone's Continue in Background setting still controls listening when the phone app is no longer on screen.

Apple Music on this iPhone

If you enable Follow Apple Music, Fanforth requests Music access and reads the current song and playback position. It uses this instead of the microphone while Music is playing. Song metadata can be sent to the same lyrics and catalog services described above. Fanforth does not upload your entire music library.

Location

Remember Where is optional and off by default. When enabled, Fanforth requests a single location fix for each newly identified song while the app is on screen. Keeping a Moment can also request a one-time fix. Fanforth does not track location in the background. Apple's geocoder receives coordinates to return a place name. Coordinates, accuracy and the place name are stored with your private history or Moment.

The current fix's speed can help suggest a Moment setting, such as a car. The speed itself is not retained. Location permission can be changed in iOS Settings.

Camera and Moments

The camera is used only when you choose to keep a Moment. Fanforth saves a still photo and, on supported devices, room geometry and a point cloud. Photos and colored point clouds can include people, objects and private-space details. Fanforth does not run separate person detection or save person positions, heights or counts, and it does not generate human figures in rebuilt scenes. Legacy person metadata is removed from local scan files when the updated app opens and from synced scans during a successful sync. Cleanup failures are reported for retry; separate device backups and copies retained by older app versions are not rewritten. These files stay in the app's local storage and are also synced to your private CloudKit database if you enable iCloud sync. Extra photos you take during a scan stay on the device only.

Sharing a Moment makes a short clip or a picture of its scene on your device. You choose what it shows: the lyric line, your own words, and your location only if you turn that on. Saving it to your photo library asks for add-only access; Fanforth never reads your photo library. Anything you then post is handled by the app you share it with, under that app's privacy policy.

Moments are included in device backups when backups are enabled, even if Fanforth's own iCloud sync is off. Apple manages device backups separately.

History and iCloud

Listening history records song metadata, the time it was heard and an optional place. It does not store lyric text. History and Moments remain on the device unless you turn on Sync with iCloud. Favorites store song metadata separately on this device and are not part of Fanforth’s iCloud sync. They never store lyric text.

Sync uses the iCloud account already signed in on your device. History, places, photos and scans are stored in your private CloudKit database. The developer cannot browse that private database. The app keeps a private sync-enabled marker in that database; it contains no handle, display name or copied user identifier. The current and last synced iCloud record identifiers are kept locally to associate sync with the correct account. Cached state alone does not start uploads. If the app detects a different iCloud account, syncing pauses until you choose to sync this device’s history and Moments with that account. This version does not create a public Fanforth profile. When it finds a public profile created by an older version, it first saves the private marker, then removes that public profile. This cleanup can run while Fanforth sync is off and retries when the app can reach iCloud. Until cleanup succeeds, the legacy public identifier and generated handle can remain accessible through CloudKit, including to the developer. Update all devices to prevent older versions from creating these records again.

Turning sync off leaves the existing local and iCloud copies in place. It stops subsequent history and Moment sync until you turn it on again. A request already submitted to iCloud may finish; the app discards a late pull response after you stop syncing. It does not prevent removal of a legacy public profile.

Purchases

Fanforth Plus is an optional monthly subscription, yearly subscription or one-time purchase through Apple. Apple handles billing and your payment details. Fanforth checks verified StoreKit entitlements to enable Plus and does not maintain a separate purchase-history database. Manage subscriptions or request purchase support through Apple.

Retention and deletion

History and Moments each retain up to 200 entries locally. Favorites remain saved until you remove them with the heart button; clearing listening history or deleting a play does not remove a favorite. Synced copies can remain in iCloud until you delete them. Deleting a play also deletes its associated Moments. Clear History removes local history and Moments and requests their removal from iCloud when sync is enabled. Deletions attempted while offline are retried during a later sync; keep sync enabled and reconnect to complete them. Deleted play and Moment identifiers are retained locally and, when syncing, as private iCloud deletion markers so updated devices do not upload old copies again. The markers contain record identifiers, not song details, photos or locations. They have no automatic expiry because an offline device can retain an old copy indefinitely. Update all devices: older versions do not honor these markers. A concurrent upload may require a later successful sync to finish removing its stored copy.

Settings → iCloud → Delete iCloud Data deletes the private sync marker, private deletion markers, any legacy public profile created under the Fanout name, and synced history and Moments. This option is also available after you stop syncing. Local copies remain available on this device. Apple subscriptions are separate; use Manage Subscription on the Plus page to cancel a subscription. The app reports an error if it cannot complete the iCloud removal so you can retry.

Deleting the app removes its local storage. It does not automatically delete your separate iCloud data or existing device backups. Manage those through iOS Settings under your Apple Account. You can revoke microphone, camera, location, photo library and Music permissions in iOS Settings.

Support and privacy requests

Contact Mitmon Labs at support@mitmon.com to ask about, access, correct or request deletion of personal information, withdraw optional consent, or raise a privacy complaint. Put “Privacy request” in the subject if convenient; no special wording is required. We may ask for information reasonably necessary to verify the request. Do not send passwords, full payment details or private photos unless specifically needed for your request.

Support receives your email address, message and any attachments you choose to send. We use them to answer the request, investigate the reported issue and meet legal obligations, not for advertising. Our support procedure calls for deleting ordinary support correspondence within 12 months after closure, unless a legal obligation, unresolved complaint or documented legal hold requires longer retention. Access-request records are retained long enough to allow the applicable complaint or review process. You can request earlier deletion, subject to those requirements.

We respond to access requests within the time required by applicable law; under PIPEDA the usual deadline is 30 calendar days. If a permitted extension or refusal applies, we explain it and the available complaint process. Because your private iCloud database and on-device files are not browsable by Mitmon Labs, we may guide you through accessing or deleting them on your device. This does not limit your legal rights. You may also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Apple, the lyrics provider and the email service handling your support message may process information outside Ontario or Canada, where local laws may allow access by authorities. Their roles and policies differ; provider retention and processing locations are not controlled by the iPhone's storage settings. We do not promise that all data remains in Canada.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when the app's practices change. Material changes requiring a new choice or consent will be presented before the new use begins.

Children

Fanforth is not directed at children under 13. It does not use advertising or tracking SDKs, ask for a date of birth, or provide an age-verification or parental-consent system. Lyrics may contain explicit language and mature themes; Fanforth does not filter them.

If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to Mitmon Labs through Fanforth or support, contact support@mitmon.com. We will review the report, take steps to stop unauthorized processing and delete information where required, and help a parent or guardian use the separate on-device and iCloud deletion controls. We ask only for information reasonably needed to handle the report and verify authority. Please do not send the child's private photos, passwords or identity documents in your initial message.
